Adolf Von Menzel (1815 - 1905) Taught by his schoolteacher and lithographer father, Adolph von Menzel exhibited his first drawing in Breslau in 1928. Upon his family move to Berlin in 1830, Von Menzel worked for his father company as a book illustrator. In 1833, he displayed a series of illustrations for the work of Goethe at the Berlin Academy. He later focused on a military-themed series and historical woodcuts. Von Menzel produced the first German political painting in response to the 1848 Revolution and titled it The Lying in State of the March Fallen. He worked as a war artist during the Seven Weeks?War in 1866 and the Franco-German War in the early 1870, and was awarded the highest honor, the Ordre Pour le Meritie.
