Anton Hartinger was born in Vienna in June 1806. He studied under the Viennese still-life painter Sebastian Wegmayr (1776-1857) and the flower painter Ignaz Strenzel (1786-1832), at the Vienna Akademie der Bildenden Künste. In 1825 he received the Grundel award and in 1829 the Füger award. In 1836 he was appointed corrector at the Viennese academic school for flower painters and in 1843 he started teaching at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. As a draughtsman, he also worked on the preparation of the botanical publication Paradisos Vindobonensis, in collaboration with various botanists. He died in Vienna in January 1890, aged eighty-three.
