Antonio Pisanello (1395 - 1455) Born Antonio Pisano but referred to as Pisanello, he was primarily a painter but also worked as a draughtsman and a goldsmith. He trained with the painter Gentile da Fabriano where he learned to paint on panel and fresco. He also is credited with producing the first personal commemorative medal for the Emperor John VIII Palaeologus. At the height of Pisanello career, he worked for the courts of Mantua, Ferrara, Pavia, Milan, and Naples, especially favored by the Gonzaga and Este families. He worked consistently until about 1449, when he was last recorded in the Aragonese court in Naples.
