Armin Hansen was a native San Franciscan whose father was the famous painter of the American West, Herman Hansen. The younger Hansen first studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco, followed by classes at the Royal Academy in Munich. Upon returning to the U.S., Hansen taught briefly at UC Berkeley before settling in Monterey in 1913, where he helped found the Carmel Art Association nearby. Inspired by the fishing industry of Monterey and the men who toiled in it, Hansen highly expressive works won him national acclaim in his lifetime. Hansen was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1926.
