August Macke (1887 - 1914) first trained under Corinth in Berlin before visiting Paris multiple times between 1907 and 1912. He was inspired by various movements in French art, particularly Impressionism, Fauvism, and Orphism. He combined all these styles and created an individual approach to painting. Although he is associated with the Expressionist movement, his paintings generally dealt with pleasant subjects rather than the anguish that other members of the movement preferred to paint. After meeting Kandinsky and Marc in Munich around 1910, the three founded Der Blaue Reiter. However, while the other members of the group headed towards abstraction, Macke continued to paint mostly representational subject matter. Macke was killed while serving in World War I.
