Charles Burton Barber was a London-based painter living near Regent's Park. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1882, showing 16 works there in all. In 1883 he became ROI. He specialised in pictures of dogs, cats and other animals, either 'portraits', or in genre scenes with people. In this he may be compared to other animal painters such as Maud Earl. By the time of his early death he was described as 'one of Britain's most promising animal painters', and the writer and humorous artist Harry Furniss held him in high enough regard to write a book on him.
Barber's work varied from the almost-photographic to the sketchy, and tended to the sentimental. One of his patrons was Queen Victoria, who commissioned him to make pictorial records of many favoured pets. Barber also made some children's illustrations, such as the Adventures of Pincher.
