Edward Borein (1873-1945) Edward Borien was born in the east-San Francisco Bay town of San Leandro, and educated in nearby Oakland. During his teens, Borein worked as a ranch hand, drifting through the southwestern U.S. Largely a self-taught artist, Borein sketched throughout his itinerant travels. At the turn of the century, Borein was working in Oakland as a successful illustrator. In 1919, he made his final move to Santa Barbara, where he taught at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts until his death in 1945. Borein left a legacy as a master etcher/engraver, a skill he learned at New York Art Students League.
