Ferdinand Bol (1616 - 1680) Although he was intended to adopt his father career in medicine, Ferdinand Bol instead learned to paint under Jacob Cuyp and Rembrandt. He began a studio in Amsterdam and focused on portraiture, and religious and classical works. Because of the strong influence that Rembrandt had on Bol work, some of his paintings have been mistakenly attributed to his mentor. As Bol reputation skyrocketed, he received many prominent portrait commissions as well as opportunities to work on many public buildings. He became the governor of the Guild of St. Luke in 1665. Bol married sometime around 1669 and abandoned his art career to concentrate on business and political affairs.
