FRANCESCO ALBANI (Bologna 1578 - 1660 Bologna). Although soon falling into oblivion after his death, Albani achieved considerable fame and prosperity during his lifetime. With Reni and Domenichino, he studied c. 1600 under Annibale Carracci in Rome. He assisted in decorating the Aldobrandi lynettes, designed the apse of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome and worked at the court of Mantua in 1621/22. In 1625 he settled in Bologna for good. He owed his reputation as the "Anacreon of painting" to his landscapes with staffage figures. They were mostly mythological, gently balanced, set in an arcadian landscape. He was rediscovered in the 20th century because his manner of representing nature is reminiscent to Poussin and Claude Lorrain.
