The Franz Marc Museum is located in a beautiful villa with unique surroundings. Furthermore it is a brilliant remembrance place for the most important Bavarian artist of the past century, set into the center of the landscape that was so important for his an his friends‘ work.Franz Marc was born in 1880 and grew up in Munich. Even as student of arts, he visited the Kochel area quite often in order to work there, and since 1908 he took his permanent residence in this rural environment. In 1914 he bought a house in Ried – a small village belonging to the Kochel community. He could only spend a few months in his house, as the World War I started in the same year. He died in 1916 in France during the war. His grave can be visited at the Kochel cemetary.The Franz Marc Museum shows more than 150 works, scripts and also lots of personal belongings of the painter. It also accomodates paintings of his collegues from the “Blue Rider” group, like Kandinsky, Muenter, Macke and Klee. The museum informs the visitors that in a short period of time the artists of the “Blue Rider” influenced the modern European art in a revolutionary way.
