Henri Gervex (1852-1929) Born in Paris, Gervex studied with Alexandre Cabanel and Euge Fromentin. He first exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1873, and in 1874 first won a medal in the Salon showing. Eventually he resigned from the Paris Salon and began to exhibit at the Salon de la Soci Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1896, on his first trip to Russia, he was commissioned to paint the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II. In Paris he received many important commissions for murals including those in the foyer of the Opa-Comique, at the Sorbonne, and the Salle des Fes of the Hel de Ville in Paris, and the ceiling of the Gold Room of them famous restaurant, "Le Train Bleu," in the Gare de Lyon. Although portraiture was not his specialty, he painted a number of notable portraits, including one of Prince Napoln.
Gerverx career can be divided fairly neatly into two periods: the earlier, before 1877, when he painted many mythological scenes in an academic manner; after 1877 he was more drawn to the representation of contemporary life, including many female nudes. In 1878 one of his nudes, Rolla, caused a scandal when it was withdrawn from a Salon exhibition for ndecency.?Shown elsewhere, it drew great crowds and today is in the collection of the Mus des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. In his second period, Gervex was influenced by a number of the Impressionists who were his friends, including Degas, Manet, and especially Renoir. He never totally abandoned his academic training, but his later painting was certainly touched by the freer spirit of Impressionism.
