Luca Giordano was born in Naples, Italy, then under Spanish rule, in 1634, the son of a painter of limited talent. Naples had an international stature that attracted artists from across the continent. Active in Naples at this time were not only Neapolitan artists such as Bernardo Cavallino, Massimo Stanzione, and Mattia Preti, but also Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco, the Genoese Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Domenico Fiasella, and the French Charles Mellin and François de Nomé. Earlier in the century, the main influence on Neapolitan painting had been that of Michelangelo Caravaggio—the artist made two brief visits to Naples in 1606-1607 and 1609-1610. His masterpiece, The Seven Acts of Mercy, revolutionized painting in Naples, introducing naturalism—soon to become a trademark of the Neapolitan school.
