Vanessa Bell (1879 - 1961) was the wife of Clive Bell, marrying the fellow artists in 1907. She was also the sister of Virginia Woolf who was active in the Bloomsbury group alongside her husband. Her initial painting approach was fairly conservative before she adapted the ideas of the Post-Impressionist movement. By 1914, Bell was painting only abstract work. She began living with Duncan Grant two years later, with whom she spent the remainder of her life traveling and painting at their house in Firle, Sussex.
