Willard Metcalf was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1858. Metcalf first professional art instruction was his early apprenticeship to a wood, engraver. He also studied landscape painting with George Loring Brown before attending the Boston Museum of Fine Arts classes. In the 1880, Metcalf left for Paris for further study at the Academie Julian. Though he did come in to contact with Monet in Giverny on this trip, Metcalf resisted the Impressionist influence until well after his return from France. Metcalf worked and taught in New York City, but is best remembered for his Impressionist landscapes of New England, and his involvement in the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
